Inclusion and involvement
At SafetyNet, public involvement and inclusion form the core of our mission.
Our approach to public involvement
Public involvement in research is when research is carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them. It is an active partnership between patients, carers and members of the public with researchers and healthcare professionals that influences and shapes research.
At SafetyNet, we strive to involve patients, carers and members of the public inclusively, appropriately and meaningfully in our work. Each of the Patient Safety Research Collaborations (PSRCs) has their individual public involvement strategies that show how public members are involved at an individual centre-level and project-level. The strategies can be found on each of the PSRC websites.
We have set up a SafetyNet Public Involvement Leads Network with Public Involvement Leads from across the PSRCs. Through this network we will:
- Share best practice and learning about how to meaningfully carry out public involvement in patient safety research
- Work on collaborative projects that support public involvement in patient safety work
Current collaborative projects
We are developing a public involvement resource to support researchers to carry out inclusive public involvement and capture the impact of public involvement.
We will work with PSRC researchers, public members and user-centred designers to co-produce a unique resource that is concise, user-friendly and practical. The resource will have downloadable templates and deliver information in the format that researchers prefer. It will include patient safety impact case studies and be globally relevant to anyone interested in doing meaningful public involvement.
