Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Equity is about recognising that each person has different circumstances and that some people face systemic disadvantages. Therefore, it involves removing barriers and allocating the exact resources, support, and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.
Diversity is about respecting and valuing individual differences. Diversity recognises that everybody is different and that we need to understand, value, and respect those differences. Diversity can include individuals and groups with varying backgrounds, experiences, styles, perceptions, values, and beliefs.
Inclusion is a universal human right. The aim of inclusion is to embrace all people irrespective of race, gender, disability, medical or other need. It is about giving equal access and opportunities and getting rid of discrimination and intolerance (removal of barriers).
Our approach to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
At SafetyNet, we are committed to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in our workforce and working environments, and in our public involvement and research. We want to ensure that our work leads to health benefits for all and helps to tackle health inequity. Each of the PSRCs has their individual EDI strategies that show how EDI is being considered and measured at a centre-level and within research and involvement opportunities. The strategies can be found on each of the PSRC websites. We have set up a SafetyNet EDI Leads Network with EDI Leads from across the PSRCs. Through this network we will:
- Share best practice and learning about how best to improve EDI in patient safety work.
- Work on collaborative projects that support EDI in patient safety work.
- Be transparent with what works and what doesn’t and be open to learning and improving.
We have also set up a Safety Equity Network that is looking to ensure that research at the PSRCs and collaborative SafetyNet projects always consider health equity and to not contribute to widening the gap.
SafetyNet EDI Maturity Model
Current collaborative projects
We are developing an EDI Maturity Matrix for PSRCs. We have been reviewing existing EDI maturity models and suggesting revisions from our individual EDI strategies. After rounds of consultation, we hope to publish our new EDI Maturity Matrix. We hope it will be useful for similar research centres to assess where they are in their EDI journey.
