NIHR SafetyNet Health Economics Working Group

In the evolving landscape of healthcare, the NIHR SafetyNet Health Economics working group emerges as a hub of collaboration and innovation across the PSRCs. By providing a collaborative platform for interdisciplinary engagement, the group seeks to bring together experts from diverse backgrounds, including patients and the public, to address complex challenges at the intersection of economics and patient safety research.

At its core, the group is driven by a fundamental mission: to integrate economic methodologies into patient safety research, fostering the development of sustainable solutions that enhance healthcare quality and minimise risks for patients. This mission is underpinned by a vision of a healthcare ecosystem where every decision, policy, and practice are informed by rigorous economic analysis, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and efficient resource allocation. Through collaborative efforts, we seek to empower stakeholders across the healthcare continuum, including patients and the public, to navigate the complexities of healthcare economics with clarity and confidence.

Working group key objectives:

  • Advance methodologies in patient safety economics
  • Foster collaboration across health economists, clinicians, policymakers, patient and public participants
  • Promote engagement with non-economist professionals
  • support policy-relevant research
  • Nurture the next generation of researchers

The NIHR SafetyNet Health Economics working group offers seminars, meetings and events focused on knowledge exchange and capacity building, aiming to foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation in safety economics, with active involvement from patients and the public. Furthermore, by nurturing the talents of junior researchers and PhD students, we aim to cultivate a new generation of leaders equipped to drive positive change in patient safety through the application of economic principles, with patient and public engagement at the forefront of our endeavours.

Who is invited to join this group?

The NIHR SafetyNet Health Economics Working Group invites individuals from a range of backgrounds, including health economists, researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and patient and public participants. We encourage active participation from patients and the public, as their insights are crucial in shaping patient-centred solutions. Whether you’re an experienced professional or an early-career researcher, the group welcomes anyone with a passion for improving patient safety through the integration of economics in healthcare.
