At SafetyNet, public involvement and inclusion form the core of our mission.

Our approach to public involvement

Public involvement in research is when research is carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them.  It is an active partnership between patients, carers and members of the public with researchers and healthcare professionals that influences and shapes research.

At SafetyNet, we strive to involve patients, carers and members of the public inclusively, appropriately and meaningfully in our work. Each of the Patient Safety Research Collaborations (PSRCs) has their individual public involvement strategies that show how public members are involved at an individual centre-level and project-level. The strategies can be found on each of the PSRC websites.

We have set up a SafetyNet Public Involvement Leads Network with Public Involvement Leads from across the PSRCs. Through this network we will:

• Share best practice and learning about how to meaningfully carry out public involvement in patient safety research
• Work on collaborative projects that support public involvement in patient safety work

Public Involvement Front Door

We know that public involvement can feel overwhelming to some researchers who are trying to navigate a plethora of information online or feeling like they are on their own and starting from scratch. The Public Involvement Front Door is an online resource designed to help researchers navigate, improve, and embrace public involvement.

Created by public involvement professionals, designers, and public members, the site combines a values-based approach with practical tips and resources to open up the world of public involvement and empower researchers of all disciplines and experience levels to meaningfully involve public members in their work. Throughout the site, you will find general guidance, graphics and illustrations, tips from public members, frequently asked questions, and downloadable resources to support you throughout your public involvement journey.
