What does it mean to take a “human factors” approach to healthcare improvement? In this SafetyNet Patient Safety 101 session, we will consider what constitutes human factors (a.k.a. “ergonomics”), key concepts and methods within this field, and how they are typically applied to healthcare. The session will include interactive exercises, demonstration of human factors/ergonomics methods and an overview of resources for further study and application.

Meet the speaker

Denham Phipps
Safety Insights Analyst at HSSIB

Denham Phipps is a chartered ergonomist and human factors specialist who has worked across a range of sectors over the previous 20 years, both as an academic and as a consultant.  Much of his work, including his doctoral and postdoctoral research, has applied HF/E in primary and secondary healthcare settings.  He is currently a honorary lecturer in patient safety at The University of Manchester, as well as working in patient safety investigation.
